In the early 1970s, the first personal computers were introduced, there was an increased influence of the women’s movement, and civil rights were making important advances. It was in this context that Dr. John Sperling, a Cambridge-educated economist, and his associates conducted a study in adult education. Their research explored teaching and learning systems for working adult students who wished to further their education. Previously colleges and universities had been focused on serving the 18-22 population while the working adult students were lost in the shuffle. From his research, Dr. Sperling saw a need for an alternative format that would serve this working student population. This eventually resulted in the founding of the University of Phoenix in 1976.

Their online programs also provide students the opportunity to utilize nearby “learning centers” for additional tutoring and social interaction.
